History of Finnish ryijy (rya rug) from 1800th century until now

Decorated rug - art rug

During 1800th Century Finnish ryijy became like it is known nowadays. Decorated, art rugs began to appear on the wall in homes.

Nowadays rug is a work of art. It is influenced both by traditions and today.

One good example of combining tradition and today are rugs made by Johanna Vuorinen. She combines traditional rug weaving and optical fibre technology.

Some Finnish artists who today design also rugs are worth mentioning: Ritva Puotila, Eva Brummer, Timo Sarpaneva, Sirkka Könönen, Nina Nisonen, Johanna Suonpää, Mari Nurminen, Jarkko Kallio, Annukka Mikkola and Immi Halsti.
