Karelian guardian doll

A guardian doll is a traditional protector of the home, the family, and all the household’s inhabitants. The doll was made from used fabrics. It was believed that repurposed cloth carried the warmth of the spirit of the person who had worn it before, giving the doll its protective power. The doll was usually made without eyes, a nose, or a mouth, as a faceless doll was believed to be protected from evil spirits. The doll was made entirely by hand without sharp or piercing tools, as using them was thought to bring bad luck. It was traditionally made from seven pieces of fabric in different colors, one of which was red. In Karelia, the color red was important, as it was believed to protect against evil forces.

How to Make a Traditional Karelian Doll
1. Tear a total of 13 fabric strips (approximately 3 cm × 25 cm) from seven different fabrics, making sure that at least one of them is red or red-patterned.
2. Fold each fabric piece lengthwise in half. Use your fingernail to press the fold sharp.
3. Gather the folded fabric strips into a bundle, placing the red strip on top. Fold the bundle in half at the center.
4. Tie a tightening thread around the upper part of the doll to form the neck, using strong red or light-colored cotton thread. You can place a small piece of fabric under the thread to form an apron. Wrap the thread three times clockwise and tie a triple knot at the back of the doll. Tie the wrists in the same way.
5. Take a piece of thread about 15 cm long and thread it through the middle of the doll’s head. Tie the hanging thread into a loop.
